Welcome to the homepage for the Redding Electric Utility (REU). Redding is one of the few cities in California with a nonprofit, customer-owned electric utility. Our focus is on customers, not shareholders, being governed by a locally elected City Council, and not a governor appointed commission in San Francisco. We exist solely to provide low-cost, safe, and reliable electricity to the citizens of Redding, and pride ourselves at being an excellent steward to the environment. Our customers save approximately $40 million a year compared to PG&E rates - that’s money that stays right here in the community!
Redding citizens, having a strong desire to set their own destiny in the power industry, began the “public power” utility in 1921. With local leaders making the decisions, Redding continues to proactively meet the specific power needs of the community.
As a full service utility, the electric department employs approximately 190 members of the community, and is comprised of three divisions: Utility Operations, Enterprise Services, and Financial Services. REU is a “vertically integrated” utility, meaning that we do it all: generation, transmission, distribution, engineering, customer service, and everything in between. We have a talented staff and they are empowered to do what is right for the customer.
As an integral part of our local community, Redding Electric Utility is proud to introduce our new motto:
Redding Electric Utility – Powering a Strong Community
